Technical Talk on Fire Safety – Automatic Detection

The SSC and BS Division organized a technical seminar titled Fire Safety – Automatic Detection on 5 July 2005. The seminar was well attended and received; over 80 participants had joined the talk.

At the beginning of the seminar, Ir. Joseph Chi, web-master of SSC, delivered a welcoming speech to the guest speaker, Ir. Samuel K P Lip, Technical and Quality Manager of the Thorn Security (Hong Kong) Ltd.

Ir. Lip introduced the main content of the talk and described the elements contributing to a fire occurrence, the statutory regulations and standard requirements on fire detection such as BS 5839, BS EN 54, etc. He also described the various types of fire detectors (smoke detector, heat detector, flame detector, carbon monoxide detector, etc.), VESDA, automatic fire alarm panel and their applications in fire detection.

Ir. Lip then presented the pro and con of various types of fire detectors, and the logic in the selection for an appropriate type of detector on fire prevention.

The highlight of the talk is on the show of two short videos, which has attracted the interest and attention of all participants in the importance of fire detectors on fire prevention.

The talk ended after series of questions and discussion among the speaker and the audience, views over the topic were actively exchanged.
